The Navy will pay full tuition assistance reimbursement for its sailors during fiscal year 2015.
Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert announced the changes Wednesday.
The original plan on the table for the Navy's TA program in FY 2015 would've required sailors to pay a quarter of their tuition costs, with the Navy footing the bill for the remaining 75 percent.
Greenert told sailors during an All Hands Call in Mayport, Fla. that the change came from the Navy's desire to make them more marketable when they make the transition to the civilian sector:
"This is important to me because I want an educated Sailor, and I want you to leave with all the certifications you can, so you can get a good job when you leave the Navy and fall right into a career. We've accelerated your life, as we like to say."
As Home Post previously reported, tuition assistance programs for the Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Army were all suspended twice in 2013. The first time was due to sequestration budget cuts, and the second to the government shutdown.
For Fiscal Year 2015, however, reimbursement rates for the Navy's TA program will be as follows:
- $250.00 per semester hour
- $166.67 per quarter hour
- $16.67 per clock hour
