Report Of Gun On Escondido Campus Was Delayed 14 Minutes

An Escondido school district is investigating a delay in notifying police that a man carrying a rifle had been spotted on a campus.

Police tell The San Diego Union-Tribune that officers rolled out to Oak Hill Elementary School last week unaware they were 14 minutes behind and the man was gone.

Instead of calling 911, the school called district headquarters and the district called police.

Escondido Union School District Superintendent Luis Ibarra says the school should have immediately called police. He says there was an apparent misunderstanding involving a policy that the district must be notified after 911 is called.

Police believe the man with the gun was carrying it from a house where five weapons were stolen. A 19-year-old man was later arrested and three guns recovered.
