San Diego County health officials are welcoming President Bush's call for a national strategy to prepare for a possible flu pandemic. County officials say they've already developed a local plan to respond to a massive flu outbreak. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
For years, the County has been working with the Centers for Disease Control on a plan to respond to an infectious disease outbreak.
Dr. Nancy Bowen is San Diego County's Public Health Officer.
Bowen: "We have the public health measures laid out there, such as surveillance, case investigation, isolation, quarantine, giving very large numbers of people vaccine within a short period of time."
Dr. Bowen says developing enough medical capacity to treat a massive influx of sick people is still a work in progress.
President Bush has called for billions of dollars in emergency spending to help the Country prepare for a possible outbreak of avian flu.
