San Diego city attorney Mike Aguirre has added five people to his collections department, and says he will send out thousands of letters to people who owe the city money. KPBS reporter Alison St John, has the story.
Aguirre says he'll focus more resources on debt collection, after an article in the San Diego Union Tribune showed the fiscally strapped city is owed over $90 million by creditors.
Aguirre: "We have not been using our highest potential when it comes to collecting money, as a result of unlawful and fraudulent business practices which we have the ability to do and also when it comes to moneys that were due and payable to the city."
The city attorney's collection division will send out 30,000 letters, at a cost of about $15,000, in an attempt to recoup over $50,000 in delinquent business taxes, unpaid rent, and parking tickets. Aguirre says he will also go after higher water and sewer rates from businesses that were billed less than state law requires. Alison St John, KPBS news.
