A year-long walk across India to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS is wrapping up this week. The San Diego-based non-profit Project Concern International organized the effort. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The AIDS walk began in the city of Dehli last December. By the time marchers return to Dehli this Thursday, they will have walked more than 3,800 miles. At each stop, organizers have staged street theatre, handed out information, and operated a mobile clinic.
Project Concern International's Mark O'Donnell was there at the start and he'll back in India for the finish.
O'Donnell: "I expect to see thousands of walkers coming into Dehli where were hundreds when we left. I expect to see energy and noise."
India has the world's second largest population of people living with HIV. The Indian government estimates 90 percent of those who are infected are unaware of their status. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
