San Marcos has become the first city in San Diego County to ban medical marijuana dispensaries. However, the action by the San Marcos city council does allow an existing dispensary to continue operating if it obeys state law. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
A medical marijuana dispensary called Legal Ease operates out of a San Marcos strip mall. The city council has decided to let it stay in business, but won't allow any others of its kind to set up shop.
More than 60 cities in California have either banned dispensaries outright, or stopped new ones from opening. Steph Sherer (STEFF SHEAR) is with the group Americans for Safe Access.
What's going to happen in areas like San Marcos where they do these preemptive bans, is that dispensaries are going to be working underground, and the city will have no regulation over them.
San Marcos officials say they just don't want dispensaries to spread. Sherer says her group will consider legal action if San Marcos doesn't change course. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
