San Diego elementary teachers won't be transferred

Teachers at a San Diego elementary school were surprised to learn they won't be transferred. The issue threatened to break-up a faculty that's been successful at improving student test scores. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The teachers at Brooklyn Elementary School faced transfers since the school recently moved to a new campus location. Union rules say the move makes it a new school. And the union contract says that teachers with the most seniority get first crack on jobs at new schools. The issue threatened to disrupt a stable staff.

But Kristin Abboud, a teacher at the school, says all the positions will be filled by current faculty.

Abbuod: "Our principal realized that by requiring teachers who bid on the position to be proficient with the technology at the site, he would help to ensure that a lot of the staff that was here if not all, which it turned out was all, would be able to stay on."

While the staff remains the same, the school's name changes to Golden Hill Elementary next year. Abboud spoke on the KPBS Radio program These Days.

Ed Joyce was the environment reporter and afternoon news anchor for KPBS-FM. Before joining KPBS, he worked as an editor/columnist with Copley News Service in San Diego. At KPBS, Ed continues his contributions to National Public Radio and other national and regional news organizations. He has won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and San Diego Press Club for his environmental reporting at KPBS-FM-TV and for producing and anchoring radio newscasts. In 2007 he was selected a National Press Foundation fellow for Understanding Violent Weather II program. The seminars were held at the National Weather Center in Norman, Okla. In 2008 he spoke at a UC San Diego conference on U.S. National Security as part of the school’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. Ed led a discussion with the 18 foreign government officials and academics about the political debate over climate change. In 2010, Ed was elected to a three-year term on the board of the San Diego Press Club.
