Thousands of people on both sides of the San Diego Tijuana border staged massive rallies calling for immigration reform today. Protestors in Tijuana blocked almost all vehicle traffic into the United States. In San Ysidro, about 3,000 people marched through the streets and many businesses were closed. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

Thousands of people snaked through the streets in San Ysidro. They waved American and Mexican flags and shouted for immigrants' rights. Many, like Johntathan Orneles, skipped school and work to be there.

Orneles says he's a first generation Mexican immigrant and graduated from UC Irvine. He says America has given him opportunities he never could have dreamed of. He says now its time for the U.S. government to extend those to all immigrants.

Orneles: "We have energy. We are mobilized. We want respect. We want rights. And together we can build the greatest country in the world."

Across the border in Tijuana, hundreds of protestors formed a human wall to prevent cars from traveling into the United States. Traffic was so light early in the day vendors who depend on border crossers for business closed and went home. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
