The San Diego Ethics Commission will consider a proposal today that bans registered lobbyists from trying to influence elected officials.
The ban would apply to groups like labor unions or political committees that raise money to buy ads in support of a candidate's campaign.
The group could not lobby the official if they spent more than $5,000 on the official's behalf. The changes are expected to redefine who should be considered a lobbyist and determine how much they should disclose about their activities. The proposal comes after a corruption case involving a Las Vegas lobbyist and three San Diego City Council members.
