San Diego school district students made small gains on California's standardized tests this year. The findings were released in a state report Tuesday. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Only 44 percent of San Diego school students are proficient in English. That's based on California's standards and reporting program, also known as STAR. The numbers are up two-percent since last year. On the math side, only 39 percent of students are proficient. That's also a two-percent increase. District spokesman Gino Flores says there's still a long way to go.
Flores: "We acknowledge that we're not finished until we get 100 percent of our students to be proficient and we will continue with our targeted instruction for our students who are low performing."
Flores says a serious achievement gap still exists between white students and minority and low-income students. The STAR scores could result in sanctions for low-performing schools. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
