September is Disaster Preparedness Month. And an expert on that topic says too many people think disaster preparation is much harder than it actually is. From Sacramento, Ellen Ciurczak reports.
These are scary times, with bird flu a threat, and Hurricane Katrina and September 11th still very much in people's memories. Fear may be why many people would rather not think about disaster preparation. But trauma expert Dr. Verona Fonte says getting a disaster kit and plan together is easy.
Fonte: "By preparing for a disaster now, you can put your mind at rest and just live your life."
Fonte says we buy car insurance and medical insurance, and disaster preparation is just another form of insurance, one that could save lives.
Fonte says being prepared is also a social responsibility, because if disaster does strike, it's not fair to burden a neighbor who may be disaster prepared when you are not. Ellen Ciurczak, Sacramento.
