Governor Schwarzenegger marked the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina Tuesday, by urging California voters to approve a levee improvement bond measure on the November ballot. During an appearance at Cal State Long Beach, Schwarzenegger said the hurricane was a wake up call to fix California’s 100-year old levee system.

Schwarzenegger : Because of Katrina I think that the legislature and the federal government has taken it more seriously that we have very vulnerable levees and they’re literally one big storm or one earthquake away from a major, major disaster so this is why it’s important for people to pass this measure.

Schwarzenegger says Proposition 1-E would authorize $4.5 billion in bond money for levee repair to protect Californians from Katrina-style flooding. Opponents say bond measures pass the buck to future generations.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
