Governor Schwarzenegger marked the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina Tuesday, by urging California voters to approve a levee improvement bond measure on the November ballot. During an appearance at Cal State Long Beach, Schwarzenegger said the hurricane was a wake up call to fix California’s 100-year old levee system.

Schwarzenegger : Because of Katrina I think that the legislature and the federal government has taken it more seriously that we have very vulnerable levees and they’re literally one big storm or one earthquake away from a major, major disaster so this is why it’s important for people to pass this measure.

Schwarzenegger says Proposition 1-E would authorize $4.5 billion in bond money for levee repair to protect Californians from Katrina-style flooding. Opponents say bond measures pass the buck to future generations.
