The San Diego Association of Governments ridelink program has seen a surge in calls for its van pool service and other commuting alternatives. Allison Richards-Evensen is with SANDAG’s ridelink program. She says the need for vans now outstrips funding for the service:

Richards-Evensen: We actually have a number of people on the waiting list at this point, we have more than 500 van pools on the road right now coming from points across the county and outside the county into the county as well, and so on a daily basis we transport more than 4,400 people”

Richards-Evensen says the program adds about six new vanpools each month. She says the vanpool program started in 1995 with 30 vans. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
