This year there is no mayoral election in San Diego County’s largest city. But the county’s second largest city is looking at a tough fight for the mayor’s office. The incumbent mayor of Chula Vista is Steve Padilla, and his run for re-election is not a cake-walk. In fact, he came in second in the primary election, out polled by challenger Cheryl Cox. Cox is a member of the local school board, and she is Padilla’s opponent in next month’s general election.
Padilla, a Democrat, says Chula Vista is doing very well economically and he’s served the city well. But political opponents question Padilla’s use of public money, including his decision to hire a personal bodyguard at city expense. Mayor Steve Padilla discusses his goals and his record going into the re-election campaign.
