A San Diego County Superior Court Judge ruled Thursday that a downtown charter school has no case against the San Diego Unified School District. The dispute was over the use of district facilities. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The lawsuit stems from last year, when San Diego Unified refused a request from KIPP Adelante Academy to move to a district-owned campus. Under Proposition 39, public school districts are required to rent space to charter schools. But Superior Court Judge William Nevett ruled KIPP Adelante’s suit is no longer relevant because it applies to last school year. District spokesman Dick Van Der Laan says the ruling paves the way for better working relations.
Nevett: We’re looking forward to a much more collaborative relationship, we’re establishing two-way communication with charter schools, we’re finding win-win solutions that make educational sense for all the 134,000 students in our school district.
