North Korea’s apparent explosion of a nuclear bomb has shaken the world. While the U.S. and the United Nations figure out how best to deal with a dangerous situation, China and South Korea have a huge stake in the decisions and the outcome. What is the Bush Administration response and will the world powers follow? We ask these questions of Susan Shirk, UC San Diego expert on China and former State Department official. Professor Shirk is also Director of the University of California system-wide Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. She first traveled to China in 1971 and has been doing research there ever since.
