Still No Permanent Home for Downtown SD Detox Center

San Diego City Council will postpone a decision on where to relocate San Diego’s Downtown Detox Center. With time running out until their current lease expires, the community resource still has nowhere to move. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

City Officials are concerned that if the Detox Center on Island Avenue closes, police will have the option of ignoring drunks in public or booking them into the County Jail, a long process that takes officers off the streets. City Councilman Kevin Faulconer has been looking for an alternative site ever since the council’s decision in Spring  not to relocate the Detox Center  in Pacific Beach.

Faulconer: It’s an incredibly important public safety issue but at the same time it’s not necessarily a service that people want in their area.

Faulconer says the city’s downtown redevelopment agency has stepped up to offer 1.3 million dollars to buy temporary trailers for the facility. However he wants to postpone a vote on that issue until the city decides where to put the trailers. The facility serves the whole county, but about a quarter of the thousands admitted each year live in downtown. Alison St John, KPBS News.
