Congressman Hunter Announces Bid for White House

San Diego Congressman Duncan Hunter says he’s running for the Republican nomination in the 2008 presidential race. Hunter was surrounded by his family and supporters as he made the announcement on the San Diego waterfront where he started his political career 26 years ago. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

With the aircraft carrier USS Midway in the background, the 13-term Republican Congressman says he’s launching a bid for the presidency.

Hunter: As I finish my final two years as chairman of the Armed Services Committee and serve you I’m also going to be preparing to run as President of the United States in 2008.

Hunter can start raising money and organize supporters while he’s chairman. Next week’s midterm election could shift power to Democrats, which would cost Hunter his chairmanship. The Vietnam veteran stressed the need for a strong national defense and border security. Hunter, who represents California’s 52nd district, had shown little interest in seeking higher office during his 26-year congressional career. He’s also running for re-election next week against two challengers.
