SD's Highways to Benefit from Passage of Infrastructure Bonds

San Diego County highways will get some much needed money following the passage of the multi-billion-dollar California infrastructure bond package. Propositions 1A through 1E provide money for schools, roads, levees and housing. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

Prop. 1B sells nearly $20 billion worth of bonds to pay for highway construction, road improvements and transit lines. Voters agreed that the state’s aging roads are worth the price tag. San Diego Association of Governments Director Gary Gallegos says the money will benefit several projects in San Diego County.

Gallegos: It’s going to mean faster improvements on the big interstates, I-5, I-805, finishing a little quicker on the I-15, improving our trolley system.

Prop. 1A would restrict the use of existing gasoline taxes for projects not related to transportation. But the tax funds could be tapped for other uses in the case of severe state fiscal hardship. It was expected to pass since it didn’t involve raising new funds. Prop 1C provides nearly $3 billion to fund new housing programs such as shelters for battered women and children. Prop.1E was also passed by voters. It directs $4 billion to repair levees and flood control systems. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
