Tom Fudge : Improving academic performance of public school children has been a high priority for California. But now we can add another item to the list of priorities: athletic performance of school kids. Unfortunately, the latest news we have on that is not so good.
About 75 percent of California kids, in grades five, seven and nine, failed to pass the state’s annual fitness test. That news was announced last month. The fitness test includes six criteria, including body composition, aerobic capacity and upper body strength.
The results of the test dovetail with other evidence of sedentary lifestyles among young people. Childhood obesity, and its many health consequences, is an established concern among health care professionals.
