Aguirre Holds Public Meeting to Discuss City's Legal, Financial Problems

San Diego City A ttorney Mike Aguirre offered an unexpected olive branch to council members he has accused of wrongdoing in the past. He held a public meeting last night to give his views on how the city is dealing with its legal and financial problems. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

As recently as last week Aguirre was sparring publicly with councilmember Jim Madaffer in open council meetings

Madaffer: Mr Aguirre . .

Aguirre: Mr. Madaffer . .

Madaffer: Mr Aguirre -- you’re out of order Mr Aguirre.
Aguirre: Mr Madaffer, with the amount of investigation that has been devoted to your illegal behavior sir.
Madaffer: Oh let’s get real personal now. Go ahead.
But last night Aguirre changed his tone towards council members Jim Madaffer, Scott Peters, Toni Atkins, and Brian Meinbshein.

Aguirre: My relationship with those four councilmembers is not always at the high water mark that I would have liked but tonight I want to extend to them that I will help them get their cases with the SEC and that I will bring the same energy  to trying to get their cases resolved so that they can get it behind them as I did for the city.

Aguirre says the SEC settlement with the city for failing to disclose the massive pension deficit to investors, does not exonerate the individuals involved. However councilmembers insist they are not involved in any investigation by the SEC. The SEC will neither confirm nor deny any investigation of individuals. Alison St John KPBS News.
