Tom Fudge: You’ve probably heard people say that California is land of fruits and nuts. And one of the nutty things about our state is its eccentric approach to religion. From Scientology, to UFO cults, to Jim Jones’s People’s Temple, our state is and has been home to people who believe in some very strange things. Now, writer and culture critic Erik Davis has written a book that explores the spiritual quirkiness of the California state of mind.
