Bush Calls for Surge in Troops
Tom Fudge: George W. Bush last night gave a nationwide address on Iraq. He told the American people that 20,000 more American troops would make a big difference, quelling sectarian violence in Baghdad. During the coming hour we’ll react to the president’s speech and hear a response from a Democratic congressman, as well as several distinguished San Diego veterans.
This presidential address was Bush’s first major statement on Iraq policy since the November election, when Democrats took control of Congress. And his first statement since Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld stepped down.
