California Produce Industry Suffers from Freezing Weather
Tom Fudge: Many of California’s farm crops are here for the same reason the people are: they like the mild weather. But every once in a while winter weather in California plummets far below normal. That’s happened this past week, as a mass of cold air from Alaska settled over the state.
The results for many of the crops we harvest in winter have been disastrous. The Central Valley was hit hardest, suffering temperatures in the low twenties. But San Diego County has also lost some of its citrus and avocado crop.
