When the first female fire chief for the city of San Diego was appointed last year, she joined a very small club of about two dozen women who head up fire departments nationwide. Although women have been firefighters for decades, it hasn’t been easy. Twenty five years ago, it took a discrimination lawsuit to force the New York Fire Department to hire a woman. A Los Angeles lawsuit by women firefighters alleges gender discrimination, a hostile work environment including sexual assault and retaliation against complainers.
