Tom Fudge: There are a lot of things that make San Diego San Diego. But one of the city's most distinctive features, and possibly its most beautiful, is the city's bay and bay front. The San Diego bay front is a diamond in the rough. It has the potential to be one of the most spectacular in the world. But it's marred by shipyards, parking lots, roads and huge buildings that wall it off from the rest of the city.
Two days ago, former State Senator Steve Peace, and County Supervisor Ron Roberts, held a press conference to talk about the bay front. They presented a plan that would transform the waterfront into something quite spectacular. In fact, it was hard not to like what Peace and Roberts proposed. But it was easy to say why it couldn't be done.
The plan calls for parks, underground parking, relocation of a shipping terminal and reconfiguration of Lindbergh Field. It would cost billions, and it would it require a huge level of cooperation among a multitude of agencies.
