Lawmaker Wants Lam to Continue Corruption Case

The U.S. Attorney General is being asked to reconsider the firing of San Diego's federal prosecutor. A democratic leader wants Carol Lam to continue her corruption investigation that sent Congressman Randy Duke Cunningham to prison. More on the story from KPBS reporter Alan Ray.

Lam has been removed as U.S. Attorney, effective a week from today. Illinois Democratic Congressman Rahm Emanuel's letter says "the timing of her dismissal raises serious and troubling questions. He's asked Gonzales to appoint Lam as "outside counsel" after she leaves the U.S. Attorney's job, so she can continue her corruption case.

The same investigation that forced Cunningham from office is expected to result in indictments of a Poway businessman and a former CIA official.

The Attorney General's office insists that Lam was removed after some members of Congress complained that she wasn't aggressive enough with immigration cases. Democrats have charged Lam was dismissed because her corruption investigations hurt Republicans and their supporters.

Lam's office had no comment on the letter to Gonzales.
