An investigation has found San Diego school district officials did not violate any laws by allowing a group of Muslim students to pray at school. Earlier this month, a substitute teacher alleged a school employee at Carver Middle School leads a group of Somali girls in a daily prayer during class.
The probe found the students do pray at school -- but on their own time during a recess, which is protected under law. Area superintendent Vincent Matthews also says the school employee does not lead the prayer, but rather prays with the students.
Matthews : What the Supreme Court has said is that students’ legal rights don't stop at the schoolhouse door. And so they have a right to pray. What they don't have a right to is an adult leading the prayer. If an adult was in the room and leading the prayer, or if we were making the students pray then that would be illegal. But that's not what’s happening.
The students are enrolled in unique Arabic Language Program at Carver Middle School. Classes are split up among girls and boys there.
