Officials Hope Rebuilt Lincoln High School Will Boost Scores, Morale

The new and improved Lincoln High School in South San Diego is enrolling students all this week. The rebuilt campus is expected to be one of the district's premier high schools. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

When Lincoln High School was demolished a few years ago, student test scores and teacher morale languished. But district officials say that's going to change once the rebuilt campus opens in the fall. They say Lincoln will be a first-class campus, giving students a first-class education in South San Diego. So far that message is paying off.

Principal Mel Collins says between 200 and 400 students signed up yesterday, the first day of enrollment. He says a long line of parents and kids were waiting their turn.

Collins : Fifty or sixty people, first thing in the morning, and there was a steady stream all day and all evening. Nothing that we could not handle. And, you know, I'm as excited as they are.

Collins says they hope to enroll 2,000 students by Saturday. The sprawling campus will feature four small schools, a state-of-the-art performance theater and athletic field.
