State Budget Freeze Threatens San Diego Senior Center

A senior daycare center in San Diego may be forced to shut down because of the budget fight in Sacramento. California subsidizes programs that provide meals and healthcare for elderly people during the day. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has the story.

Irina Sherif is head of the Clairemont Villa daycare center for adults. Medical normally covers all her expenses. But that's on hold, because the state budget is seven weeks overdue.

Sherif says she hasn't been paid in a month, and she's taking out high-interest cash advances to pay her employees.

Sherif : And we could close our doors -- but we don't know where our participants will go. Because they're all very sick people. They need help. We feed them three times a day here. And actually, they're safe here.

Sherif says an emergency spending bill could keep the doors open.

But Democratic Senate leader Don Perata says that probably won't happen. He says he won't entertain any legislation until a complete budget is passed.
