Tom Fudge: This week These Days has been examining many facets of our water supply and water use, which most people believe will soon need to be increased or reformed. And today, we examine two new and potentially vast supplies of water that our society could develop.
These sources go by the names reclamation and desalination. Today, San Diego takes millions of gallons of potentially usable water and dumps it in the ocean. I'm referring to the water that ends up in our sewage treatment system. And speaking of vast water supplies, there is the Pacific Ocean itself. Removing the salt from sea water is an intriguing possibility. But it's one that comes at the price of environmental impacts and a lot of use of energy.
