City Council Bans Booze on Beaches
Tom Fudge: Yesterday, the San Diego City Council did something it's done at least twice before in its history. It banned the use of alcoholic beverages on the beach. In both earlier attempts, which occurred in 1991 and 2001, voters ended up overturning the council's ban at the ballot box.
Yesterday, the ban was put in place for just one year. Council supporters didn't have enough votes to make it permanent. That means that when it expires in January 2009, City Hall will have to vote on the issue again.
