U.S. bus company officials are concerned a recent spate of rock attacks in Tijuana could drive already dwindling tickets sales down further. Officials say their buses are being pelted by rocks shortly after crossing the border southbound into Tijuana. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Juan Antonio Lopez with Greyhound's Crucero bus line says rocks have shattered windows on 30 vehicles from five companies during the last two weeks.
He says the attacks on buses traveling from Southern California to destinations in Tijuana and beyond take place just past Tijuana's Yellow Cab stand.
Lopez says taxi drivers trying to protect their business were behind similar attacks in previous years. He's not clear who or what is behind the latest spate of rock throwing.
Lopez: The impact is the deterrence of people coming to Tijuana. It's a long term impact. I probably won't see it today or tomorrow but I'll see it in a month or two when people decide to avoid Tijuana completely.
Lopez says ticket sales to Tijuana and further south have already dropped 30 percent in the last year.
He says Curcero buses have changed their route in Tijuana and hired security to escort buses.
Baja California authorities are investigating.
