The San Diego Unified school board will not meet its self-imposed deadline to hire new superintendent. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The San Diego Unified school board will not meet its self-imposed deadline to hire new superintendent. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

School board members wanted to have a new leader in place by January 1st, a day after current Superintendent Carl Cohn officially steps down. They gave themselves only a few months to conduct a search and hold interviews. But now it looks like a new superintendent will not be in place until well after the new year.

School board Vice President John De Beck says lengthy background checks are causing delays.

De Beck : No final decision has been made yet because we're still in the process of doing the things you have to do to go through this.

De Beck says contract negotiations will also slow the process.

San Diego school board members have named the district's Chief administrative officer William Kowba as interim superintendent.
