Tom Fudge : When you examine the across-the-board state budget cuts recommended by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the most controversial, and possibly the most painful, is to education. K-12 education is a huge line item in the state budget, and the governor wants to cut $4.4 billion from it.
When you do the math, you find that means $350 million would need to be cut from public education budgets in San Diego county. $80 million of that would have to come from San Diego Unified, the largest local school district.
The onerous task of figuring out how the San Diego city school district could possibly cut $80 million falls to the districts' new superintendent and the school board.
