S.D. County Invests in Small Regional Airport

San Diego County Supervisors agreed today to buy about 100 acres of land next to the Borrego Springs airstrip in Imperial County. The decision is part of the county's growing investment in small regional airports. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

County Airport Director Peter Drinkwater says the land purchase will be a buffer zone to keep the Borrego Valley airstrip viable in the future.

Drinkwater : You can handle most of the corporate jets and all of the turbo props. So it makes it capable for different types of charter and commercial services should that ever be needed.

The $100,000 for the land purchase comes from the County's Airport Enterprise Fund. That fund has grown from about $12 million in 2006 to nearly $50 million this year. The FAA has contributed millions to the fund for upkeep and development of the county’s eight regional airports.
