A former United Nations official visiting San Diego says the consequences of global warming will create a climate of conflict and environmental disaster.

Jan Egeland is the former U.N. under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator. Speaking on the KPBS radio program These Days , he pointed to two key ways to handle the humanitarian challenges of climate change.

Egeland : Curbing emissions of greenhouse gases. Both in the industrialized countries where we have to come down dramatically. And then India, China, which have these exploding economies, have to curb their growth. And the second thing, we have to help the most vulnerable survive because it's a question of life and death now in the most disaster exposed areas.

Egeland is ranked by Time Magazine among the hundred most influential people in the world.
