Tom Fudge: This election year, there are two contests in the city of San Diego that are getting a lot of voter attention, and which are getting a lot of our attention. I'm talking about the race for mayor, and the race for city attorney. Normally, you wouldn't expect the city attorney election to be one of great interest. But that was before the current office holder, Mike Aguirre , made it a venue for sharp criticism of the council and mayor. In fact, the things Mike Aguirre has tried to accomplish as city attorney have become one of the major issues in the race; perhaps THE major issue.
Critics, and some supporters, say Aguirre has tried to make the office a platform for government and policy reform. Critics go on to say the problem with the incumbent is that his primary job is supposed to be providing city officials with good legal counsel, and winning cases in court.
One of the candidates running in the race is a woman who once worked for Mike Aguirre in the city attorney's office. She's now a lawyer in private practice. Her name is Amy Lepine.
