Of the 1,100 people who'll likely receive pink slips, well over half are teachers. None or all of the positions could be cut depending on how much state education funding the Legislature and the Governor approve for next school year.

Right now the Governor's proposed cuts translate into an $80 million loss for San Diego Unified. The district's Ursula Kroemer says the district has to work with that number because its required to turn in a spending plan before the state's budget is approved.

Kroemer: The district and principals don't have a choice. We are required by law to have a balanced budget. Principals absolutely have a difficult process in getting a balanced budget -- some more so than others.

Teachers and parents will speak out against the cuts.
