Memorial Day celebrations are taking place throughout San Diego County today. One such event took place at the Vietnam War Memorial Monument on Coronado. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.

A group of families sat in silence as they faced a curve concrete wall with the names of men who died in Vietnam while serving in the Navy and Coast Guard. In fact three small boats from the the "Brown Water Navy" era are stationed in front of the monument.
Charles McVain is a retired Navy captain. His younger brother died in Vietnam at the age of 25.
McVain:
It's also that balance between reaching out to reconnect with fond memories and making yourself very vulnerable to the terrible anguish, sad feelings, destructive things that go along with war.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of people turned out for the annual Memorial Day Service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. More than 66,000 U.S. flags were placed on grave sites there over the weekend. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
