Latest Field Poll Shows Californians Approve of Same Sex Marriage

Field Poll researchers say it's a first for them in three decades.  Their survey on the issue of same sex marriage shows a majority of people think the idea is OK. From Sacramento, Jenny O'Mara reports.

The survey shows Californians approve of the idea of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry by a 51% to 42% margin. Seven percent had no opinion. The views vary based on voters' ages and where they live. Californians aged 18 to 29 favor the idea by a more than 2 to 1 margin. Voters age 65 and older disapprove 55% to 36%. Voters living on the coast favor allowing same sex marriage while those living in inland counties largely oppose it. The Field Poll's directors say this survey represents a major change: 6 previous polls over the last 30 years showed a majority of Californians opposing same sex marriage.
