San Diego County homeowners may see a Special Property Tax Initiative on the ballot in November, to pay for more fire protection assets. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
New taxes are known as the third rail of San Diego politics. But County Supervisor Ron Roberts says he’s ready to support a flat rate, $50 parcel tax on every single family home in the County. He says it would be more reliable than a sales tax.
Roberts : With a parcel tax you’d know what your programmed amount’s gonna be.
The proposed parcel tax would raise $48 million a year. Roberts favors a plan to follow Los Angeles’ lead, and build a bigger fleet of fire-fighting helicopters.
Mayor Jerry Sanders is more cautious.
Sanders : I wanna make sure we don't build this model based on the dream aircraft fleet. I just want to make sure we’re being very reasonable
The regional Fire Protection committee, including local mayors and fire chiefs will discuss how the parcel tax might be spent later this month.
