County Clerks Gear Up for Same Sex Marriages This Week

From changing the paperwork to planning security, county clerks across California have been gearing up for same sex marriages that will get underway early this week, Tuesday in most counties. From Sacramento, Jenny O'Mara reports.

The updated marriage licenses are ready: it will be "party A" and "party B" rather than bride and groom. That's just one important detail. Steven Weir is president of the California Association of Clerks and Elections Officials . He says some county workers will get lots of overtime. He's bringing in volunteers to perform ceremonies. He says county officials should consider extra security for potential protests. And he has advice for couples.

Weir:  "I think that most clerks won't want walk-ins for doing ceremonies and some clerks may require an appointment to do a license so somebody should check with their clerk before the day they're going to come in to get either a license and or have a ceremony conducted."

Weir, who is also the Contra Costa County Clerk, will marry his partner of 18 years on Tuesday morning. No honeymoon though; he'll return to work on Wednesday.
