Governor Schwarzenegger Will NOT Ban Fireworks

It looks like Governor Schwarzenegger will NOT be calling a statewide ban on fireworks this year. From Sacramento, Marianne Russ reports. There was widespread speculation that the Governor was considering a ban on backyard fireworks given the hundreds of fires burning statewide and the drought conditions. But in a new statement, Schwarzenegger says he does not plan to order the statewide ban. But he is encouraging counties to consider local limits. Earlier in the week, the Governor asked Californians not to buy fireworks this year sparking outrage from charities up and down the state who sell the devices as a fundraiser. For now, Fire Marshall approved "safe and sane" fireworks remain legal in most communities. Those are the varieties that don't explode or leave the ground.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
