Tom Fudge : Owls. They are wild birds of prey, which like other winged raptors, play well with our imaginations. In the case of the owl, it's large head and stern, serious gaze makes it look, to us, like an judgmental creature endowed with wisdom. That has resulted in many popular literary and movie characters such as Owl, in the Pooh stories of A.A. Milne.
Of course, the reality of owl life is a bit different. And here in San Diego we have no shortage of opportunity to observe owls. We often hear their screeching calls outside our windows at night as they nest in palm trees.
Stacey O'Brien, Nancy Conney and her barn owl will be at Warwick's bookstore in La Jolla on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 7:30 p.m.
