The housing meltdown has prompted some unusual questions for state and county elections officials. Some Californians who have recently lost their homes to foreclosure aren't sure where to vote next week. California Secretary of State Debra Bowen says those who have moved to temporary housing can still cast ballots.
Bowen: Under California law it's very clear that if someone has not formed a new residence, that they can continue to vote at their last permanent residence.
Counties also say voters who have moved but not re-registered can cast a provisional ballot near their new home. However those ballots must be verified by local registrars. Elections officials in Sacramento and San Joaquin counties say the issue has emerged this year. The San Joaquin County registrar says they had a number of sample ballots returned before February's election-and found out it was because the owners of the homes had left due to foreclosure.
