Maureen Cavanaugh : The fairy tales of the Brother's Grimm are strange, magical and slightly savage. But then again, so is life.
Accordingly, it takes a sophisticated mix of musical styles and theatrical elements to bring these fairy tales to life. That's just what my guests have attempted in their one-act opera "Rumplestiltskin," currently playing in it's world premiere with full orchestra at the Lyric Opera San Diego .
The new piece is part of an ambitious double-bill at the Birch North Park theatre. Right after the "Rumpelstilskin," members of the Lyric Opera change clothes and characters to perform one of Gilbert and Sullivan's early works called "Trial by Jury."
Lyric Opera San Diego presents Gilbert & Sullivan's "Trial by Jury" and the world premiere of "Rumpelstiltskin" through Sunday, February 22, 2009.
