Maureen Cavanaugh : The American South has given us some of our greatest artists, from novelists and playwrights, to actors and poets. But where the South is unsurpassed is in its contributions to American music. The number of musical styles and great singers, musicians and songwriters who come from the South is almost inexhaustible. And, because there are so many, there are some great artists who have been overlooked or who've never gotten the attention their talent deserves.
The annual music edition of the Oxford American magazine finds little-known gems of Southern music as well as celebrating the giants like Ella Fitzgerald and Jerry Lee Lewis. Oxford American founder and editor Marc Smirnoff joins us to talk about the performers featured in the magazine's 10th anniversary Southern Music edition. And, we'll be hearing some of the music on the 2-CD set that comes with the magazine.
