Golf Industry Generates Billions For S.D. Economy

The golf industry had a $3.7 billion impact on San Diego County's economy in 2008, according to a study released today.

The golf industry also contributed to 26,900 jobs in the region, according to the study by the National University System Institute for Policy Research.

Spending on golf-related supplies and services by those living outside the county equaled $1.5 billion in 2008, the study found.

"While other regions may be home to more courses or have more golf-related tourism, San Diego is unique in having four vibrant cornerstones of the golf economy," said Erik Bruvold, president of the NUSIPR. "The region hosts multiple professional events, supports 90 golf courses and is home to the industry's leading equipment manufacturers."

The study looked at equipment manufacturers, professional tournaments, golf-related tourism and the retail sale of golf equipment and apparel to gauge the industry's local economic impact.
