Increased Patrols For Boating Under The Influence

Operation Dry Water is a nationwide campaign. There’s even a media blitz with this public service announcement that doesn’t pull any punches.

“You wouldn’t believe what we see out here. The worst accidents and injuries happen when boaters are under the influence".

Gloria Sandoval is with the California Department of Boating and Waterways. She said statewide there were 570 boating accidents last year and nearly 30% of all boating fatalities were alcohol related.

“I’ve seen people with backpacks filled with alcohol. That’s their purpose, going out there, having fun, which is okay to have fun out boating. But at the same time there are risks involved with drinking alcohol," Sandoval said.

It’s illegal to operate a boat if your blood alcohol level is 0.08% or higher. Violators can be fined, arrested and have their boats impounded.

The timing of Operation Dry Water is significant. Figures show more boating accidents occur in July than in any other month.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
